About/Contact/Links
Welcome to our attempt to display some information about the history of rowing with emphasis on North American rowing. This site will be an ongoing project. Hopefully over a period of time it will grow into a substantial resource on rowing history. We hope that all information is as accurate as can be. Sometimes the sources may be newspaper articles and personal recollections and may not be as accurate as expected. If you have any input, corrections, or suggestions – please contact us.
The Friends of Rowing History is an informal group interested in the rich history of rowing. In 1992 the group comprised of Ted English, Llewllyn Howland, Tom Mendenhall, Bill Miller, Hart Perry, Bob Reed, Julien Tavener, and Tom Weil assembled at the Union Boat Club – Boston to share their common interest in celebrating rowing’s past. Many ideas were expressed on how to preserve this history before it all fades away and is forgotton.
We are working closely with the National Rowing Foundation to help establish a rowing history presence. We are happy to have anyone with a similar interest join us as well and any organization or association that could use some support to contact us. Again this is a very informal and loosely organized group.
